Lab: Virtual Machines Network Topologies

Author

Pablo Fraile Alonso

1 Goal

Build the network configurations from the virtualization slides twice:

  1. In VirtualBox.
  2. In QEMU/KVM with libvirt and virt-manager.

2 Rules

  • Use the same logical topology in both hypervisors.
  • Do not add extra adapters unless the exercise asks for them.
  • Do not enable IP forwarding or routing inside Kali.
  • If ICMP fails, check the guest firewall before changing the topology.
  • You donโ€™t need to boot up everything (just the devices required for the ping tests).
  • Be aware that you can work more efficiently if you understand how virtual disks work.

3 Topology

4 Questions

  • Which devices can do ping the machine #1?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #2?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #3?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #4?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #5?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #6?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #7?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #8?
  • Which devices can do ping the machine #9?
  • How would you expose an http server (that itโ€™s allowed to be searchable on your home network / the internet) on machine #1?
  • How would you expose an http server (that itโ€™s allowed to be searchable on your home network / the internet) on machine #3?
  • How would you expose an http server (that itโ€™s allowed to be searchable on your home network / the internet) on machine #5?
  • How would you expose an http server (that itโ€™s allowed to be searchable on your home network / the internet) on machine #6?
  • Which host (or hosts) would you use to analyze a virus file?
